Course Description:
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to computers and related technology and the societal issues surrounding their use in our society. Topics include the history of computers, current computer technology and terminology, the Internet, and societal issues related to computer use, such as security, privacy, intellectual property rights, ethics, health, and the environment. Emphasis will be placed on current uses and applications of the Internet and World Wide Web as they relate to digital information and knowledge based systems. Students will learn how to use several of the most widely used application software programs. No prior computer experience is assumed.
Course Goal:
Students will have literacy in computer science and information technology as science fields and applications to modern day to day life.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course students will be able to:
- Have basic literacy of computers and their use in day to day life.
- Have competency in using computers and their application in their coursework assignments as tools to aid in business life.
- Have enough understandings of computer science and information technology to be able to consider the field as their major.
- Demonstrate educational awareness of ethical, societal, and security issues surrounding the use of computers and their application in modern life.
